D'varim for Teens: Shabbat Sha-raps

D'varim, Deuteronomy 1:1−3:22

Have you ever been curious how relatable the Torah really is? A group of staff from the Kutz365 Alumni Network decided to spend an entire year rapping the weekly Torah portion, or parasha, from the Torah. Shabbat Sha'Raps started at camp in the summer of 2016, and then grew through Zoom over the course of an entire year. Filmed from Zoom boxes around the globe, this creative interpretation of Torah is a fun and easy way to understand the weekly Torah portion. Join Evan, Matt, Melissa, and lots of special guests on this joyful journey of discovering Torah!

In this parasha, Moses recaps the physical journey the Israelites underwent, and reflects on the reports of the spies. Joshua will become the next leader. Listen to other reflections from Moses.

Saturday morning and the peeps are here
It’s time for Shabbat – let me get a cheer
We’ll talk about Moses, Aaron, the Levites too
Ayyoo Matt, you know what to do

Just last week was Matot/Masei
It was a great one, boy did it slay
We finished up Numbers and that’s a fact
Uhhh, Deuteronomy, it’s time to act
Well Devarim is just a big recap
Where Moses reflects and reviews the map
Of the Israelites’ travels across the land
Walking 40 years strong, hand in hand

Moses says his final words of instruction
It’s time for Joshua’s big introduction
Moses knows he has 37 more days
It’s difficult for him, Canaan is only a gaze

From escaping Egypt to fighting tons of wars
We made our enemies fall on all fours
We’ve been struggling through the desert for 40 years
And even with God, you all still had fears
Remember when I made judges for everyone
Or sent out the spies, that was kinda fun
I know I’m not making it, I’m sort of scared
There’s not much left, but I’m ready and prepared

As we go forward, we got to know
All the commandments, and that’s fo sho
But we can’t have fear, no we can’t back down
Like Michael Phelps, there’s no way we can drown

We appreciate the love, Devarim is done
We miss you dearly, but we got to run
Kutz Camp is home for one and all
Let’s keep it going each week, and we’ll have a ball

Thanks for listening to our tenth rap
Stay tuned for more, we’re putting ourselves on the map
This has been your – Shabbat Sha’Rap!
